Volleyball rolls to sweep of LIU
Senior Alicia Nelson (Apple Valley, Minn.) tallied a match-high 21 kills and the Stony Brook University volleyball team hit a season-high .337 on its way to a 3-0 (25-23, 25-21,25-18) victory over the Long Island Blackbirds on Wednesday night. The Seawolves improved to 10-9 with the victory, which snapped a six-match LIU winning streak.

After a convincing win over Morgan State and a 10-day layoff from game action, the Seawolves, winners of four of their last five matches, look to keep the momentum going into their home opener against the LIU-Brooklyn Blackbirds Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Last Time Out: The Seawolves split their two matches at the Seton Hall Invitational Sept. 14-15. Melissa Rigo continued her impressive freshman campaign with 33 kills in the two matches. Another freshman, Nicole Vogel, recorded 19 assists to help knock off Morgan State in straight sets. Stony Brook totaled a season high of nine service aces in the match. Stephanie McFadden also had a very strong weekend with 16 kills and a .500 percentage against Seton Hall on her way to making the All-Tournament team along with Rigo.

Scouting LIU-Brooklyn: LIU is 8-7 to start the 2012 season with a 2-0 record in Northeast Conference play. On Sunday, LIU beat Quinnipiac in straight sets. Sophomore Annika Foit leads the team with 211 kills, 3.58 kills per set on the season. Vera Djuric has recorded 589 assists so far this season with 9.98 per set. Jessica and Ashley Rice also contribute to the offense as two veteran middle blockers with 1.91 and 2.05 kills per set respectively. The Blackbirds will try to improve their 2-3 record away from home.
