Stony Brook sputters at Seton Hall, 3-0
Oct. 22, 2013
South Orange, N.J. - Despite team-highs of 18 assists from Hannah Dolan and 11 digs from Lo Hathaway, the Stony Brook volleyball team fell to Seton Hall, 3-0 (25-18, 25-14, 25-10), in non-conference action Tuesday night.
Stony Brook staked an early 5-2 lead in the first set after Costello, Kathy Fletcher and Rigo scored on three consecutive kills and later went up 6-3 on a Seton Hall service error. The Pirates tallied the next four for a 9-6 lead, which forced Stony Brook to ask for time. The Seawolves stayed within striking distance in the moments that followed but could not retake the lead despite 10 assists by Dolan.
SHU used a fast start in the second frame to claim a 2-0 advantage in the match. Kills by Rigo and Costello helped the Seawolves keep pace early in the third, though they trailed, 3-2. Seton Hall went on a 4-0 spurt to go up by five, 7-2, but a Taylor Gillie kill and an SHU miscue trimmed the deficit to three, 7-4. The Pirates answered with a barrage of points over the next couple of minutes to distance themselves from the Seawolves and secure a home win.
