Final Stats

Bronx, N.Y. – On the strength of a double-double from Kaitlin Costello and fantastic play from middle blockers Taylor Gillie and Stephanie McFadden, the Stony Brook volleyball team posted its third victory in four matches with a 3-2 (21-25, 25-21, 25-22, 17-25, 15-9) come-from-behind win over Fordham Tuesday at the Rose Hill Gym.

Costello recorded her sixth double-double of the season on a team-best 16 kills and 11 digs for Stony Brook (6-11), while Gillie tallied a match-high seven blocks and had 12 kills on .417 hitting. McFadden turned back five attack attempts by Fordham (8-10), led the Seawolves with two aces and chipped in 10 kills while hitting .500.

Melissa Rigo posted 14 digs, and Hannah Dolan served up 42 assists, both team-highs.

Head Coach Coley Pawlikowski’s Reaction

“I’m glad we came away with the win. We played a little streaky tonight. However, when we played confidently and aggressively and made the changes we need to make, we saw success. I hope we take that away from the match. Fordham is a really solid defensive team. Their libero and setter do a really good job and challenged us. It was good to beat a scrappy and aggressive team.”

Recap

The Rams took a 16-10 lead in the first set following an 8-2 run. The Seawolves then tallied five of the next seven points and pulled to within two, 17-15, on an ace by McFadden. After Fordham scored a kill on the ensuing volley, Gillie responded with a smack of her own to make it 18-16. However, the hosts pulled away thereafter and won the set.

Stony Brook never trailed in the second stanza and led by as many as five, 10-5, though the frame remained close. Fordham knotted the score at 21-all late, forcing the Seawolves to call timeout. The Rams gave up the lead on two consecutive errors, and Kathy Fletcher scored a kill to give SB a 24-21 edge and set-point opportunity. Another error by Fordham locked up a Stony Brook win and evened the match at one set apiece.

The third stanza was also neck-and-neck, but three straight Fordham points put Stony Brook in an 18-15 hole and forced Pawlikowski to ask for time. Rigo trimmed the deficit to one, 18-17, with back-to-back smacks and an attack error on the home team tied the score at 18-18.

After a Rams kill gave them a 19-18 edge, they committed a service error on the ensuing rally. The Seawolves took advantage as Costello and Rigo scored kills and Rigo combined with Gillie for a stuff to put SB ahead by three, 22-19. Moments later, Stony Brook clinched the set on a kill by Gillie to go up 2-1 in the match.

The Rams came back strong in the fourth frame to force a fifth set. In the deciding stanza, SB took an 8-5 lead after McFadden scored a kill and notched an ace. Fordham closed the gap to two, 8-6, with a block but then committed a service error. Fletcher recorded an ace on the next possession as the advantage expanded to four, 10-6, and the Seawolves rolled on for the win.
