Final Stats

Minneapolis, Minn. - Junior Alicia Nelson (Apple Valley, Minn.) tallied a team-high nine kills and senior Ashley Headen (Alexandria, Va.) added eight but it wasn't enough as the Marquette Golden Eagles hit .321 on its way to 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-19) victory over the Stony Brook University volleyball team on Friday night at the Sports Pavilion in the opening game of the 2010 Golden Gopher Invite. It was the season opener for both teams.

Sophomore Corinne Perry (Northport, N.Y.) registered 20 assists for the Seawolves while senior Jeanette Gibbs (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) had a game-high seven digs. Ashley Beyer led Marquette with 13 kills.

Stony Brook trailed 7-6 in the opening game of the match following a ball handling error by Nikki Klingsporn but the Golden Eagles then ran off nine straight points to take a 10-point lead. The Seawolves closed within 19-11 on a Perry service ace but Carol Henney answered with a kill and Marquette would go on the nine-point opening game win.

The Seawolves held an early 4-3 lead in game two following a kill from freshman Hailee Herc (Eden, N.Y.) before Marquette scored seven of the next nine points to take a 10-6 lead. SBU rallied to tie the game at 13 on a kill from Headen but then, with the game tied at 14, the Golden Eagles scored five straight points to take a 19-14 advantage.

Stony Brook had an answer though, closing with three, at 23-20, on error from Klingsporn. But the Golden Eagles responded with two straight points, clinching the game on a Rabbecka Gonyo kill.

Game three was close most of the way, with SBU taking a 13-12 lead on a kill from Herc. Marquette tied the game on Gonyo kill and then took the lead on kill from Beyer. Stony Brook trailed 17-16 following a kill from Nelson before the Golden Eagles scored three consecutive points to take a four-point lead.

A Nelson kill brought SBU with four at 23-19 but Ciara Jones answered with a kill for Marquette before another kill from Beyer clinched the game and the match for the Golden Eagles. Beyer hit .579 for the match.

The Seawolves continue play in the Golden Gopher Invite on Saturday, taking on sixth-ranked Minnesota at 1:45 p.m. EST before facing off against Denver at 4 p.m. EST.
