The Stony Brook volleyball team hit .310 on their way to a sweep (25-13, 25-15, 25-20) of the Quinnipiac Bobcats on Saturday at the Black Knight Invitational, picking up its first win of 2012. SB dropped a tough five-setter to Army (23-25, 25-21, 19-25, 25-18, 15-13) in its second match of the day despite 22 kills from freshman Melissa Rigo (East Northport, N.Y.). 

The Numbers Game

• The Seawolves held Quinnipiac to an -0.85 attack percentage as no player had more than five kills
• Stony Brook went 1-2 at the Black Knight Invitational to open its 2012 season
• Rigo tallied her second double-double of the weekend against Army as she had 14 digs to go along with the 22 kills
• Sophomore Laura Hathaway had 24 digs against Army while junior Hailee Herc had 18, just one off her career-high
• Freshman setter Nicole Vogel finished with a combined 75 assists on Saturday including 48 against Army and averaged 9.33 assists per set for the weekend
• Stony brook had 84 digs against Army
• Rigo hit .310 and averaged 4.25 kills per set in the three matches at the Black Knight Invitational 
• Stony Brook's four freshman combined for 95 kills, 117 assists and 59 digs in the three matches over the weekend

Key Moments

• Stony Brook never trailed in the first two sets against Quinnipiac 
• The Seawolves trailed 12-4 in the third set against the Bobcats but used a 13-3 run to take a lead it would     never relinquish
• Stony Brook led 11-10 in the fifth set against Army following a kill from Rigo but the Black Knights scored five of the final seven points to win the set and the match  
• With the third set tied at 18, the Seawolves scored seven of the final eight points to take a 2-1 over the Black Knights; junior Kaitlin Costello had back-to-back kills in the midst of the run

The Seawolves return to action next Friday and Saturday for the Yale Invitational.
