Women's tennis has strong showing at USTA/ITA Regionals

West Point, N.Y. - Stony Brook's women's tennis team traveled upstate for the USTA/ITA Northeast Regional Championships at Army this past weekend. The Seawolves recorded a number of strong showings, including three ladies who advanced to the third round in singles. Freshman Jackie Altansarnai (Hinsdale, Ill.) upset Katherine Flanigan of Princeton, 1-6, 6-2, 6-4, before falling in the next round to Yale's Madeleine Hamilton. Senior Nini Lagvilava (Tbilsi, Georgia) topped Army's Jamila Paul, 6-2, 7-6. She took the first set, 6-1, against Cornell's Christine Ordway, but dropped the next two sets, 7-5, 6-3. Sophomore Polina Movchan (Kiev, Ukraine) advanced with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Brown's Sarah Kandath. In the third round, Movchan gave Harvard's Heidko Tachibana all she could handle, but lost 7-5, 7-5, in the third round. Freshman Becky Shtilkind (Brooklyn, N.Y.) won her first match, 6-4, 6-3, in the qualifying singles draw before losing in the quarterfinals. The duo of Movchan and Shtilkind won their first and second round match, 8-6 and 8-3, respectively, to advance to the round of 16 before falling 8-3. The women's 2013 spring season begins at Army on February 8 against the Black Knights.
