Softball hits the road for NC State tournament

TOURNAMENT CENTRAL | VIRTUAL GUIDE Raleigh, N.C. - The Stony Brook softball team will travel to Raleigh, N.C. this weekend for five games at the NC State Wolfpack Challenge. The Seawolves open the competition on Friday against Kansas at 4:15 p.m., before battling the host Wolfpack at 6:30 p.m. Tournament Schedule Fri., Mar. 1: Stony Brook vs. Kansas, 4:15 p.m. LIVE STATS Stony Brook The Seawolves (4-6) will be looking to continue their impressive play after posting a 3-1 record at the Longwood Spring Classic last weekend. Sophomore Shayla Giosia (Runnemede, N.J.), the reigning America East Player of the Week, hit .333 at Longwood with a home run and six RBI, including a grand slam against Bucknell last Saturday. Giosia leads the team with 12 hits and six runs so far this year.
In the circle, junior Christine Lucido (Melville, N.Y.) owns a team-best three victories (3-0) to go along with a 2.45 ERA. The reigning America East Pitcher of the Week held opponents to a .208 average last weekend, while allowing just one extra-base hit in seven innings of work. Competition Stony Brook will up against stiff competition in Raleigh this weekend. Kansas is off to a 10-4 start and features 11 batters that are hitting above a .300 clip, including five players that are above the .400 mark. Maddie Stein leads the team with a .449 average and 20 RBI, while Alex Hugo owns a .404 clip and four home runs. In the circle, Kelsey Kessler (3-2, 2.25 ERA), Alicia Pille (3-2, 2.58) and Alex Jones (3-0, 2.80) have all featured prominently. North Carolina State (7-5-1) will also present a tough matchup on its home field. Renada Davis has already smacked six home runs, despite hitting just .214 at the dish. Pitcher Emily Welman has been dominant for the Wolfpack with a 2.12 ERA and 60 strikeouts in 72 innings. Tournament History The Seawolves last appeared in the NC State Wolfpack Challenge in 2011 and posted a 3-1 record. Stony Brook defeated James Madison, Charleston Southern and host NC State, while falling to Fairfield. |
