March 30, 2013
Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Stony Brook softball team (16-15, 3-2 AE) posted a pair of dominant victories over UMBC on Saturday, winning the first game, 8-0, and the second game, 8-1, at University Field.
"I thought both games were team efforts, in terms of good pitching, great defense and timely hitting. We look forward to finishing this series up tomorrow."
--Head Coach Megan Bryant
Firing on all cylinders in Saturday's opener, Stony Brook scored four runs in the third and two runs in both the fourth and fifth to bring the game to an early close via the eight-run rule.
Sophomore Bria Green (Wheatley Heights, N.Y.) crushed a two-out grand slam in the third to account for the first four runs, before an RBI single by freshman Alexandra Pisciotta (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) made it 5-0 in the fourth.
Leading by six runs in the fifth, junior Jessica Combs (Hammonton, N.J.) hammered an RBI single to center to make it 7-0. On the next batter, UMBC pitcher Miranda Clark threw a wild pitch, allowing senior Gina Bianculli (Oakdale, N.Y.) to score from third to end the game.
Sophomore Allison Cukrov (Irvine, Calif.) was dominant in the circle, firing a complete-game, two-hitter, while striking out eight.
The Retrievers (8-24, 1-4 AE) struck first in the second game, plating a run on an RBI double in the second by Kayla Martinez. The deficit was quickly erased, however, as Combs knocked in another run with a single in the third to make it 1-1.
The Seawolves then erupted for seven runs in the fourth to blow the game open. Stony Brook recorded seven hits in the frame, including a two-RBI single by sophomore Shayla Giosia (Runnemede, N.J.) and capitalized on two UMBC errors.
Junior Christine Lucido (Melville, N.Y.) improved to 7-1 with seven solid innings in the circle.
