March 10, 2012
Fort Myers, Fla. - A six-run first inning carried the Stony Brook softball team to its fifth straight win on Saturday in a 9-4 victory over Colgate at the FGCU Tournament in Fort Myers, Fla. Stony Brook will take on Utah at 8:15 p.m. in the second game of the day.
The Seawolves (8-3) sent nine batters to the plate before Colgate recorded an out in the first inning, drawing seven walks and adding two hits to take a 6-0 lead. Sophomore Nicole Schieferstein (Seaford, N.Y.) recorded the only run-scoring hit of the inning, a single to score sophomore Nicole Hagerty (Sicklerville, N.Y.), as Stony Brook managed four runs via walk and one thanks to a wild pitch by Colgate starter Rachel LeCoq.
Colgate was able to chip away and bring the score to 8-4 after three innings, but Seawolves' starter Taylor Chain (Gloucester, N.J.) settled in and allowed just two hits the rest of the way to pick up her first win of the year. Chain struck out five batters over seven innings and lowered her ERA to 4.20 on the season.
Three Seawolves recorded multi-hit efforts, including freshman Shayla Giosia (Runnemede, N.J.), who knocked in a run in the seventh inning and finished 2-for-5 to raise her batting average to .343. Giosia leads the team with 10 RBI in 11 games and has hit safely in her last five outings, going 9-for-16 (.563) over that stretch.
