March 10, 2013
Boca Raton, Fla. - The Stony Brook softball team (7-13) wrapped up the FAU Invitational on Sunday with a 6-1 win over Florida A&M and a 1-0 loss to Louisiana-Monroe. Junior Christine Lucido (Melville, N.Y.) picked up her fifth win of the year with a complete-game effort against the Rattlers.
In the first game of the day against Louisiana-Monroe (11-14), the Seawolves allowed just one run on six hits, but were stifled at the plate in a 1-0 defeat. Freshman Jane Sallen (Lake Worth, Fla.) started and allowed only two hits in three efficient innings, allowing a run on a sacrifice fly in the third. Sophomore Allison Cukrov (Irvine, Calif.) then came on in relief and pitched four scoreless frames while striking out three.
Stony Brook mustered just two hits, one by sophomore Bria Green (Wheatley Heights, N.Y.) and the other by freshman Diane Caruso (Middletown, N.Y.). Caruso's hit, a leadoff single in the sixth, nearly helped the Seawolves tie the game, but pinch runner Nicole Schieferstein (Seaford, N.Y.) was left stranded on third after a pop up ended the frame.
In Stony Brook's final game of the weekend, Lucido fired the team to its first victory at the tournament with a complete-game, five-strikeout effort against Florida A&M (5-19).
Stony Brook struck first in the third when junior Olivia Mintun (Neoga, Ill.) scored on an error. The Seawolves then tacked on four runs in the fourth, plating three via two more errors and the other courtesy of a Jessica Combs (Hammonton, N.J.) RBI double.
Redshirt junior Jessica Zeilman (Newfield, N.J.) then brought home another run in the seventh on a run-scoring single, her third hit of the ballgame.
