Box Score

Farmville, Va. - The Stony Brook softball team (3-5) posted a 2-0 record on Saturday at the Longwood Spring Classic, notching a 13-2 win over Bucknell (1-5) and a 3-2 victory over the host Lancers (5-1). Sophomore Shayla Giosia hit her second-career grand slam and finished with five RBI against the Bison.

Game One

The Seawolves offense exploded in the first game of the day to the tune of 12 hits and 13 runs, including a nine-run outburst in the top of the third. Sophomore Bria Green (Wheatley Heights, N.Y.) went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run, while junior Nicole Schieferstein (Seaford, N.Y.) added a 3-for-4 performance with a pair of RBI.

Sophomore Allison Cukrov (Irvine, Calif.) earned her first win of the year with a complete-game, four-hitter, fanning nine batters and allowing just one earned run.

Stony Brook manufactured its first five runs of the game, before Giosia delivered the knockout punch with her second-career grand slam to make it 9-0 Seawolves in the third. The sophomore then added her fifth RBI in the seventh, scoring freshman Patty Borges (Berkley, Mass.) on a single, to cap a four-run frame.

Game Two

In the second game of the day, Stony Brook scored a run in each of the first three innings and used stellar pitching to hand the Lancers their first loss of the year.

After Longwood grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, Green tied the score in the bottom of the frame with a solo home run, her first as a Seawolf. Borges then notched her first collegiate RBI in the second on a sac-fly to give Stony Brook a 2-1 advantage, before the Seawolves added another run in the third courtesy of an error.

Junior Christine Lucido (Melville, N.Y.) pitched well, allowing just two runs in five innings, while striking out one. Freshman Jane Sallen (Lake Worth, Fla.) then came on in the sixth and threw two scoreless innings to pick up her first-career save.

The Numbers Game

• The Seawolves outscored their opponents, 16-4, on Saturday and held Bucknell and Longwood to just nine total hits.
• Stony Brook combined to score eight runs in its first five games this year, before plating 13 in a single game against Bucknell Saturday.
• Green finished the day 4-for-8 with a home run, two RBI and two runs.

• Giosia's grand slam was the second of her career; her first came last year against Binghamton on Apr. 29.
• Giosia's five RBI represent a new single-game career high.
• Schieferstein posted her second-career three-hit game on Saturday.
