#Seawolves head to Hartford Thursday for title game rematch
Oct. 9, 2013
West Hartford, Conn. - The Stony Brook women's soccer team will travel to Hartford on Thursday for a rematch of the 2012 America East championship game. The Seawolves defeated the Hawks last November to win their first-ever conference crown. Kickoff Thursday is set for 6 p.m.
Last Time Out
The Seawolves (7-3-1) knocked off UMass Lowell last Sunday by a score of 1-0 to improve to 2-0-0 in America East play. Senior Larissa Nysch (Dresher, Pa.) scored the only goal in the ninth minute with a header following a cross by junior Shannon Grogan (Eastampton, N.J.). The victory gave Stony Brook its fifth straight win over America East opposition dating back to last year; all five wins have come by one goal.
The preseason favorite in the America East, Hartford (6-4-3) has struggled at the outset of conference play. The Hawks opened America East action with a 3-1 win over Albany, but have since lost back-to-back home games to Maine and New Hampshire. Hartford enters as the stingiest defensive team in the conference, having allowed just eight goals in 13 matches (0.58 per game). The Hawks have posted a conference-high seven shutouts and keeper Jessica Jurg leads the America East with a 0.53 GAA.
Offense vs. Defense
Thursday's matchup will feature the America East's top scoring offense (Stony Brook) vs. the conference's top scoring defense (Hartford). The Seawolves are averaging 1.82 goals per game, while the Hawks are conceding just 0.58 goals per game.
Title Game Rematch
Stony Brook returns to Al-Marzook Field for the first time since winning the America East title in November 2012. The No. 6 seed in the 2012 America East Tournament, the Seawolves upset the No. 1 Hawks on the strength of a Larissa Nysch goal to give Stony Brook its first-ever America East championship.
The Seawolves were once again ranked in the NSCAA Northeast Region Poll this week at No. 10. The only America East institution in the poll, Stony Brook has been ranked regionally for five weeks of the 2013 season.
