Baker earns America East Rookie of the Week nod
Oct. 1, 2012
Cambridge, Mass. - Freshman Kristen Baker (Easley, S.C.) of the Stony Brook women's soccer team was named the America East Rookie of the Week on Monday, as announced by the conference office. Baker scored two goals, including the game-winner in double OT, on Sunday as the Seawolves knocked off Binghamton, 2-1, for their first America East win of the season.
Baker scored her first of the game in the 17th minute with a long-range effort on the right wing. Senior Taryn Schoenbeck (Newark, Del.) initiated the play with a short corner to freshman Tessa Devereaux (Fayetteville, N.Y.). Devereaux then dropped the ball back to Baker, who took a touch and let loose a high shot that found its way into the top left corner from nearly 30 yards out.
Nearly 90 minutes later, Baker again came through from well outside the box. After gaining control in the box with her back to the net, Devereaux pivoted and played the ball wide to Baker on the left wing. Baker then lofted a shot towards the far post, which just eluded the outstretched arms of the Binghamton keeper and found the side netting at 106:06 of the second overtime.
Baker is the second Seawolf to garner Rookie of the Week honors (Aley Leonardi) and fourth Stony Brook player to be honored by the conference in 2012 as senior Sa'sha Kershaw (Baltimore, Md.) and junior Caitlin Pfeiffer (Holland, N.Y.) were each named Player of the Week earlier this season.
The Seawolves (7-3-2) host Vermont on Thursday at 7 p.m.
