Coach's Corner - A Letter From The Desk Of Coach Ryan
June 16, 2010
Stony Brook, N.Y. - Stony Brook, N.Y. - Greetings from Stony Brook women's soccer! Welcome to this edition of Coaches Corner, a newsletter created to provide you, our supporters, with valuable insight into our program. I couldn't be more excited about the direction of our program. We had a terrific 2009 season during which we advanced to the America East semifinals; the third straight season that our program has advanced to the semifinals. We also played No. 23 Rutgers to a 1-1 tie and defeated eventual conference champion Boston University, 2-1, during the regular season. The victory over the Terriers ended BU's 22 game conference-win streak. We have 19 letter-winners returning from last season including nine starters. Among those starters returning are junior Colleen McKenna (Manorville, N.Y.), the 2008 America East Rookie of the Year, and sophomores Sa'sha Kershaw (Baltimore, Md.) and Taryn Schoenbeck (Newark, Del.), who each earned a spot on the 2009 All-America East Rookie team. Sa'sha led the team in points (14) and tied for the team lead in goals (six). In addition we have an outstanding class of nine freshmen joining our program in the fall. I believe it is our finest recruiting class from top to bottom. Click here to learn more about them. Our 2010 schedule was recently announced and includes games against three 2009 NCAA participants including Maryland and Rutgers. We have our typically challenging non-conference schedule that I think will get us ready for the always tough conference slate. Click here to see our entire 2010 schedule.
We recently completed a terrific spring season during which we saw great improvement in our team. The spring season gave us the opportunity to try out some new formations and has also given us a great chance to look at some of our younger players. I'd also like to let you know about a terrific experience a member of my staff recently had. Associate Head Coach Steve Welham was invited to observe the girls U.S. U-15 National Team in Chula Vista, Calif. at the Olympic Training Center (OTC) from May 7-15. The Training Center rests on a 150-acre complex adjacent to Lower Otay Lake in San Diego County. It was a wonderful opportunity for Steve to learn first hand from a top level coaching staff and see some of the best talent in the country. In closing, I would like to extend a special thanks to all our alumni, friends and family who have contributed to our 2010 P.A.W.S. campaign. If you have not yet made a gift to P.A.W.S. and would like to do so, please contact Rob Emmerich at 631-632-6312 or by email at Robert.Emmerich@stonybrook.edu. Once again, thanks for all of your support. Remember, Get Your RED On and Go Seawolves! |
