Women's Soccer Drops 2-1 Overtime Thriller To Boston University In America East Semifinals
Nov. 1, 2009
Boston, Mass. - Freshman Sa'sha Kershaw's (Baltimore, Md.) goal in the 15th minute gave the Stony Brook University women's soccer team a 1-0 lead but Jessica Morrow scored the game-tying goal in the 73rd minute and Emily Pallotta then scored the game-winner with 2:24 left in overtime to lead the top-seeded Boston University Terriers to a 2-1 victory over the No. 4 Seawolves in an America East semifinal game on Sunday afternoon at Nickerson Field. Senior goalkeeper Marisa Viola (Cutchogue, N.Y.) made 10 saves in the game for the Seawolves. Sophomore Dana Adamkiewicz (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) set-up the Seawolves goal as she drove a free kick from left side into Kershaw, who one-timed it into the net to give the Seawolves the 1-0 lead. It was the sixth goal of the season for Kershaw, tying her with freshman Meghan Gilley (Macungie, Pa.) for the team lead. The Seawolves headed into the break still leading 1-0 as Viola made four saves in the first half. BU goalkeeper Janie Reilly made one save in the opening period. Viola kept the Terriers (13-5-2) off the scoreboard early in the second half, making three saves over the first 20 minutes of the period. But BU evened the game at 1-1 with 17:26 left in the second half as Pallotta headed the ball to Morrow, who one-timed it into the net. Neither team was able to push across a goal over the final 17 minutes of the contest as the game headed into overtime. Pallotta struck with the game-winner in the 98th minute as she headed in a cross from Farrell McClernon. Reilly finished the contest with two saves for the Terriers. Sunday's contest concluded a brilliant four-year career for Viola, who set program records for shutouts (26) and games played by a goalkeeper (70). The 2008 America East Goalkeeper and 2009 second team all-conference selection finished second in program history with 467 saves.
The Seawolves concluded the 2009 season with a record of 7-10-2, nearly making it to their second straight America East title game. It marked the third straight season the Seawolves have advanced to at least the America East semifinals. |
