Women's Soccer Drops Home Opener To Siena, 4-2

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Junior Rachel Silverman (Rye Brook, N.Y.) scored the game-tying goal in the 69th minute but Ashleigh Barone notched the game-winner less than 10 minutes later to lead the Siena Saints to a 4-2 victory over the Stony Brook University women's soccer team on Friday night at LaValle Stadium. Stony Brook falls to 0-2-0 with loss while the Saints improve to 2-0-0. Trailing 2-1 midway through the second half, the Seawolves were awarded a free kick at midfield. Freshman Julianne Palm (Stilwell, Kansas) then struck the ball into the 18-yard box and sophomore Sa'sha Kershaw (Baltimore, Md.) corralled the loose ball just in front of the end-line on the left hand side of the net. Kershaw's shot was deflected by Siena goalkeeper Elizabeth Barna but it bounced to Silverman who put into the net for the game-tying score. But Barone answered with her second goal of the game in the 78th minute as she won the ball on the right side of the 18-yard box and then struck it into the upper-left corner of the net to give the Saints a 3-2 advantage they would not relinquish. SBU nearly tied it minutes later but senior Debbie Aller's (Stony Brook, N.Y.) head ball went just over the net. Brittany Pfaff put the game away in the 85th minute with her second score of the game, taking a pass from Lindsay Tegas at the top of the 18-yard box. Stony Brook freshman goalkeeper Chelsea Morales (Temecula, Calif.) got a hand on Pfaff's shot but the ball trickled into the right corner of the net to give Siena the 4-2 lead. Stony Brook took a 1-0 lead in the 52nd minute as Aller was able to head in the corner kick of junior Dominique Adamo (Ramsey, N.J.) for her second career goal. Pfaff tied the game just over four minutes later and Barone then gave the Saints the lead in the 64th minute as her shot from 25 yards out hit the crossbar and bounced just behind the goal line.
Barna earned the victory for Siena, making three saves. Morales also had three saves for the Seawolves, who out-shot the Saints 13-10. Stony Brook also held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks. Stony Brook had the first scoring opportunity of the game in the 15th minute as freshman Larissa Nysch (Dresher, Pa.) headed a corner kick that seemed destined for the back of the net before being cleared away by a Saints defender. Silverman nearly gave the Seawolves the lead in the 35th minute but her drive from 20 yards out clanked off the crossbar. The Seawolves return to action on Sunday, traveling to take on Iona. Game time is set for 1 p.m. |
