Piscataway, N.J. - Freshman Chelsea Morales (Temecula, Calif.) made four stops but the No. 18 Rutgers Scarlet Knights scored two first-half goals on its way to a 3-0 victory over the Stony Brook University women's soccer team in the season opener for both teams on Friday night at Yurcak Field.

Neither team was able to record a shot over the first 10 minutes of the game before Gina DeMaio took a free kick from 25 yards out that went just over the hands of Morales to give the Scarlet Knights a 1-0 lead.

The Seawolves had their first scoring opportunity in the 16th minute as junior Dominique Adamo (Ramsey, N.J.) took a free kick from just in front of midfield. She hit it into the 18-yard box but Rutgers keeper Emmy Simpkins came out to grab it on the left-hand side of the six-yard box.

Rutgers pushed its advantage to 2-0 in the 23rd minute as Julie Lancos knocked a free kick from the left-hand side of the 18-yard box into the upper right corner of the net. The Scarlet Knights nearly scored again minutes later as Ashley Jones got free inside the 18-yard box but freshman Jennifer Taylor (Ashburn, Va.) was able to clear it away before Jones could get a shot off.

Morales made an outstanding save on April Price's shot from 20 yards in the final minutes of the first half, diving to her right to corral Price's low line drive shot. Jonelle Filigno made it 3-0 in the 55th minute, blasting a shot from 25 yards out over the outstretched hands of Morales and into the upper right corner of the net.

SBU had its best scoring opportunity of the second half in the 70th minute as Adamo put a free kick into the right-side of the 18-yard box. The ball deflected to junior Rachel Silverman (Rye Brook, N.Y.), who headed it towards the net. But Simpkins was in position and made the stop.

The Seawolves return to action on Friday, Aug. 27, hosting Siena at LaValle Stadium in their home opener. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
