Kingston, R.I. - Goals by Sa'sha Kershaw (Baltimore, Md.) and Colleen McKenna (Manorville, N.Y.) gave the Stony Brook women's soccer team an early 2-0 lead, but Rhode Island rallied for three straight goals to prevail, 3-2, in Friday's season opener in Kingston, R.I.

"We came out really well and started the game brightly. The work ethic the entire game was very good, we just lost our way in the last five minutes of the first half and that was really where we lost the game. The effort in the second half was tremendous and we never gave up. I thought a lot of our younger players had really strong games. But for all the effort we had, we couldnt get enough shots on goal to really test their keeper in the second half."

Turning Point

Stony Brook led 2-1 in the waning minutes of the first half, but Rhode Island scored twice within 55 seconds to swing the momentum and put the Seawolves on the back foot heading into halftime.

• Stony Brook went in front 1-0 in the 5th minute when Kershaw headed in a Taryn Schoenbeck (Newark, Del.) corner kick
• The Seawolves doubled the lead in the 15th minute courtesy of a McKenna strike from 18 yards out
• URI got on the board at the 23:22 mark when Marisa Ammaturo took an Ashley Evangelista pass and fired the ball into the upper right corner
• Rhode Island tied the game at 2-2 at 42:04 as Jennifer Barrientos slipped the ball inside the left post
• Just 55 seconds after URI's second goal, the Rams took the lead for good on a goal by Ellie Bailes

Key Plays

• Castanio made a point-blank save midway through the first half, tipping the ball onto the post and out of harm's way
• Freshman Stella Norman (Castle Rock, Colo.) made her collegiate debut in the second half and nearly scored on her first touch, ripping a shot just over the bar off a corner kick

• Three freshmen started in tonight's season opener: midfielder Tessa Devereaux (Fayetteville, N.Y.), forward Raven Edwards (West Orange, N.J.) and defender Meagan Hallworth (Simsbury, Conn.)
• Five other freshmen also saw their first collegiate action: Norman, Aley Leonardi (Kennebunkport, Maine), Kristen Baker (Easley, S.C.), Danielle Fuller (Staten Island, N.Y.) and Sarah Darmanin (Miami, Fla.)
