Stony Brook, N.Y. - Attacker Claire Petersen (Wantagh, N.Y.) of the Stony Brook women's lacrosse team will compete for a spot on the 2012-14 U.S. Lacrosse women's national team July 27-29 at UMBC.

Petersen had earned her spot in the tryout pool after a strong showing in open tryouts. She is among 38 of the 143 open tryout participants to gain entry in the pool. The 38 will join returning members of the national team and individuals who were waived into the second round of tryouts to encompass the new tryout pool.

Between 36 and 40 players will be selected for the national team, which will also serve as the pool for the 2013 World Cup roster. The team is led by head coach Ricky Fried, and the national team selection committee is chaired by Anne Phillips.

Petersen enjoyed arguably the most prolific season in Stony Brook women's lacrosse history when she posted school records in points (101) and assists (59). She also holds the school's single-game records for points (10) and assists (7). She finished second in the nation in points per game (5.94) and assists per game (3.47).

After the season, Petersen was named America East Player of the Year, first-team All-Mid-Atlantic Region and third-team All-American.
