Cambridge, Mass. – After leading the No. 15/15 Stony Brook women’s lacrosse team to a pair of wins, senior goalie Frankie Caridi and freshman attacker Courtney Murphy have been named America East Defensive Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively.

The nation’s leader in save percentage and goals-against average and anchor of the top scoring defense in the land, Caridi now has five Defensive Player of the Week honors to her name this season. The Northport, N.Y., native allowed three goals and totaled 12 stops last week for a staggering, conference-best 1.62 goals-against average and .800 save percentage.

Caridi surrendered only two goals against Jacksonville, the lowest output of the season for the nation’s eighth-ranked scoring offense, before limiting Binghamton to one score in 51:21 of work. Arguably the top goalie in the country, she has allowed two goals in SBU’s first two America East games.

With Caridi in the cage, the Seawolves have held opponents to three goals or fewer five times in 12 games and in each of their last three contests. She has anchored a defensive unit that has kept teams to single-digit goal scoring in 11 games and to five goals or fewer on eight occasions.

Murphy continued to flourish, leading the league in goals (10), goals per game (5), points (11), points per game (5.5) and shooting percentage (.769) for her third Rookie of the Week win. In a contest featuring Jacksonville’s high-octane offense, Murphy reigned supreme with a game-high four goals on five attempts. For an encore, she poured in six goals on eight shots to go along with one helper in a Seawolves win over Binghamton Sunday.

Murphy has scored a goal in 10 of her first 12 collegiate games. She sits second on the team with 37 goals this season, two behind classmate Dorrien Van Dyke, and is approaching Kaitlin Leggio’s single-season school freshman mark of 46 goals set in 2006.

Stony Brook has earned nine weekly honors and has garnered at least one in seven of eight weeks this season.

The Seawolves put their seven-game winning streak on the line at Yale Wednesday at 4 p.m. before heading to Albany for an anticipated America East showdown Saturday at noon.
