Final Stats

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Senior Claire Petersen posted eight points on three goals and five assists, while classmate Demmianne Cook poured in seven goals as the No. 15/16 Stony Brook women's lacrosse team's run-and-gun offense returned to form in a 21-3 victory over Iona Wednesday night at LaValle Stadium.

Sophomore Michelle Rubino tallied a hat trick and chipped in three assists, and Frankie Caridi sparkled in net again, making four stops in nearly 45 minutes of play for Stony Brook (6-2).

Maria Ortiz made 11 saves for Iona (2-6).

"We came out with some urgency and bounced back from the Maryland game. The scoring was spread out, and a lot of people got playing time, which is always important. We're looking forward to our conference opener on Saturday."

Turning Point

Stony Brook got on the board a mere 33 seconds into the contest when Petersen found Cook for a goal and a 1-0 lead. Kylie Gregory tallied the equalizer for Iona on an assist from Brittney Mabus at the 28:44 mark.

The tie did not last long as Petersen fed the ball to Amber Kupres and Cook for a pair of goals less than one minute apart to put the Seawolves in front, 3-1, with 27:21 left in the first half. 50 ticks later, Petersen netted a goal of her own, and Emily Mercier quickly followed with a score as SBU gained a 5-1 advantage. 

Petersen put in an unassisted goal as the lead ballooned to five, 6-1, less than six minutes into the game and then dished it to Rubino to make it 7-1 with 23:10 remaining in the opening stanza. Shannon Coleman, Petersen, Cook and Kelly Kuerner each scored a goal to cap off a 10-0 run that put the Seawolves squarely in control with an 11-1 lead with 14:38 left until halftime.

The Numbers Game

• Stony Brook blanked Iona in the second half, marking the second time this season the Seawolves have held an opponent scoreless after the break. SBU did not allow a goal in the second frame at Marist last Wednesday.
• SB has held seven of its first eight opponents to single-digits in goals and has notched double-digits in scoring in six of its eight games.
• In total, nine different Seawolves registered a goal, as seniors Janine Hillier and Kaitlyn Harrison scored two apiece.
• Stony Brook controlled the tempo with an 18-8 advantage on draw controls, including a perfect seven-for-seven in the second stanza. Cook led the Seawolves with eight controlled draws, which is tied with Rubino and Danielle Werner for eighth-most in Stony Brook single-game history.
• Hannah Perruccio made three stops in the final 15:10 of the game.
• Mercier picked up a team-best three ground balls for Stony Brook and matched Cook for a team-high in caused turnovers with two.
• Gregory finished with two scores, while Meghan Testoni notched a goal for the Gaels.   

News and Notes

• The Seawolves have reached their highest national rankings in both major polls, coming it at 15 and 16 in the IWLCA Coaches' Poll and deBeer Media Poll, respectively. SBU jumped three spots in the coaches' poll while holding strong at No. 16 in the media poll for the second consecutive week. 
• With her third goal of the game, Cook became the fifth Seawolf to notch 100 career goals. She has scored 104 goals in her career and is 8 away from tying Melissa Cook for fourth all-time on SBU's career goal ledger.
• The 18-goal margin of victory is tied for the most all-time in Stony Brook single-game history. The Seawolves previously bested Longwood by 18 in a 21-3 victory in their 2013 home opener March 9 and toppled Lehigh, 22-4, in 2007.
• Stony Brook moves to 3-0 all-time against Iona.

SBU continues its stretch of four games in seven days with a weekend road swing, beginning with its America East opener against Vermont Saturday, March 23 at noon. The Seawolves then play Siena Sunday, March 24 at 1 p.m. before hosting Fresno State, their final nonconference opponent of the season, Tuesday, March 26 at 7 p.m. at LaValle Stadium.
