Stony Brook, N.Y. - The two top-ranked offenses in the country engaged in a defensive battle as the No. 18/16 Stony Brook women's lacrosse team held No. 1/1 Maryland to a season-low in goals, but the Terps pulled away late for the 8-3 win Sunday afternoon at LaValle Stadium.

Frankie Caridi made six saves in her second consecutive full game in net, while Claire Petersen paced Stony Brook (5-2) with two points on one goal and an assist.

Kate Schwarzmann netted a hat trick and chipped in one assist, and Alex Aust scored two goals and dished out two assists as Maryland improved its unblemished record to 9-0.

Turning Point

Stony Brook took an early 1-0 lead on an unassisted tally by sophomore Michelle Rubino and trailed by just one, 4-3, at the intermission. Taylor Cummings took a feed from Aust and found the back of the net six minutes into the second stanza to give the Terps a 5-3 edge.

The two squads played scoreless lacrosse for the next 19 minutes before Aust put in a free position shot to extend the guest's lead to three, 6-3, with under five minutes to play. Brooke Griffin tallied a goal off an assist from Aust with 2:43 left in the second half, and Aust scored her second goal of the day moments later as the Terps went in front, 8-3.

The Numbers Game

• Rubino, Petersen and Janine Hillier each netted a goal for Stony Brook, while Petersen registered the team's lone assist.
• Rubino led Stony Brook on the draw with three controlled draws, while Beth Glaros tallied three for Maryland. The Terps held a slight edge in draw controls, 7-6.
• Caridi picked up a game-high four ground balls, while Rubino finished with three.
• Rubino, Justyne Passarelli and Kelly Kuerner each caused one turnover.

News and Notes

• SBU's first goal of the game was its 100th of the season. It took the Seawolves eight games to do that last season, and they ultimately went on to break the school's record for goals scored in a single season (263).
• Petersen moved into sole possession of eighth on Stony Brook's single-season assist ledger with 23 assists in 2013.
• This was the smallest margin of victory of the season for the Terps.
• Maryland's previous low for goals in a game this year came yesterday against Boston College when the Terps tallied 13 goals.
• Both of Stony Brook's losses have come against top-three opponents as SBU rallied but fell to then-No. 3/3 Florida, 16-9, in Gainesville in February.
