Danie Caro enters her third season as the head women's lacrosse coach at Stony Brook in 2003-04. The first women's lacrosse coach in school history, Caro was named to the position in July of 2001 and guided the Seawolves through their first season as a club team in 2002 before embarking on the program's first season at the varsity level in 2002-03. Stony Brook's first season of Division I competition was a tremendous success as the upstart Seawolves qualified for America East Conference postseason play. Four Seawolves went on to earn all-conference recognition while two others were named to the conference's all-tournament team. Finishing the season with a 7-10 mark, the Seawolves proved that making a run at the conference title is not far off and that Caro has the team headed in the right direction. No stranger to building a women's lacrosse program, Caro oversaw the transition from club team to varsity status at both St. Bonaventure University and Manhattan College before arriving at Stony Brook. "I would not have started another new program unless the situation was right," Caro said. "But Stony Brook was the right situation. I was given a year to recruit and develop the club players, the administration was behind the program from day one, and the facilities are second to none. Because of that, I believe that Stony Brook can be one of the elite programs in our conference and nationally." Caro came to SBU with over seven years of collegiate women's lacrosse experience, spending two years as head coach of the Bonnies. After a debut season in which St. Bonaventure failed to win a game, the team showed dramatic improvement the next spring, finishing 6-10. In addition, one of Caro's recruits was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Rookie of the Year, and the Bonnies' goalkeeper was ranked sixth in the nation in save percentage. Caro also saw several other players ranked in the national stats, including three of the nation's top 10 players in caused turnovers. Meanwhile, the Bonnies were the nation's second-best team in caused turnovers and ranked fifth in ground balls. Prior to her stint at St. Bonaventure, Caro served as assistant coach for one season at Colgate University with her primary responsibilities the defense and goalkeepers. She coached a unit that finished third in the nation in goals per game and saw five starting defenders named to the All-Patriot League squad. It was at Manhattan Colllege that Caro first started her trend of building programs. She spent two seasons at the helm and led the Jaspers to a successful start in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. Caro compiled records of 6-7 and 6-8 during Manhattan's first two varsity seasons en route to receiving MAAC Coach of the Year honors in 1998. She also coached six All-MAAC players and a rookie and goalkeeper of the year. Caro began her coaching career in 1994-95 as an assistant at Frostburg State, a position she held for one season. Caro is currently serving the second year of a three year term as President of the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA). She previously served as the IWLCA's Division I Vice-President, and sits on the Women's Division Board of Governors for US Lacrosse, the national governing body for men's and women's lacrosse. For the past four years Caro has served as the New York Region Post-Collegiate Selection Chair, and previously was the District President for the Central region of the United States Women's Lacrosse Association. She also is the director of the Stony Brook girls lacrosse clinic and camp programs. A 1993 graduate of Colgate University, Caro was a four-year starter at goalkeeper and earned All-Patriot League and All-Regional honors as a senior. Caro earned a master's degree in education from Frostburg State University in 1996. |
