Final Stats

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Jessica Previlon poured in a career-high 18 points, but the Stony Brook women's basketball team fell to UMBC, 52-51, in front of its largest home crowd of the season Wednesday, Feb. 20 at Pritchard Gymnasium. The game was televised on Optimum Local 118.

Previlon and Sabre Proctor notched Seawolf-highs of seven rebounds apiece as Stony Brook (13-14, 5-9 AE) outrebounded UMBC (10-16, 6-9 AE), 35-21.

Raven Harris played 40 minutes for the Retreivers and led all scorers with 23 points.

Harris and Previlon were selected America East Players of the Game.

Turning Point

Stony Brook led, 43-40, with just over seven minutes to play after a lay-up by Previlon. Kim Browning hit a pair of free throws after being fouled by Gerda Gatling on the other end to bring the guests within one, 43-42, at the 6:27 mark.

Brittany Snow missed a lay-up, and Harris grabbed the defensive rebound. On the other end, Previlon picked up an errant pass by Ashley Lambert, but Snow missed a jumper on the offensive side of the court.

Harris knocked down back-to-back triples with 5:13 and 4:26 remaining as UMBC grabbed a five-point advantage, 48-43.

Stony Brook battled back, starting with a basket in the paint by Proctor at the 3:57 mark that cut the deficit to three, 48-45. Browning responded with a jumper to give the Retrievers a 50-45 lead with under 3:30 to play.

Previlon and Browning exchanged lay-ups to push the score to 52-47 with about two minutes left.

Dani Klupenger could not hit a triple with 1:55 to play, but Previlon grabbed the offensive board and fed the ball to Proctor, who was fouled by Browning. The sophomore tallied a pair of free throws to make it a one-possession game, 52-49. 

Chikilra Goodman intentionally fouled Harris two ticks later and pulled down the rebound after she missed her free throw. Later in the possession, Previlon drove inside for a lay-up as SBU found itself within one, 52-51, with 1:21 on the clock.

Neither Brittany Crowell nor Harris could put the ball in the basket in the final minute, but Klupenger's jumper at the buzzer missed the rim as SBU suffered a 52-51 setback at home.

The Numbers Game

• The Seawolves held Bria White and Crowell scoreless. Crowell entered the matchup second on the team and fourth in the conference in scoring average at 14.2 points per contest, while White was third with 9.2 points per game.
• Proctor tallied 11 points for SBU.
• The is the 14th time this season Previlon has reached double-digits in points, a team-high, and the sixth time she has led SBU in scoring.
• Stony Brook shot 40 percent from the field (20-for-50) for the game, while UMBC shot 46.5 percent (20-for-43)
• The Retrievers' largest lead of the game was eight and came with 8:44 remaining in the first half.

News and Notes

• Previlon played a career-high 36 minutes, topping the previous mark of 35 that she set in the Seawolves' last game at Vermont on Saturday, Feb. 16.
• Klupenger added to her career triples tally with two 3-pointers. She now has 105 for her career, which is fourth all-time at Stony Brook.
• Prior to today's contest. Stony Brook's largest home crowd was 410 against Navy on Nov. 11. The attendance at this afternoon's contest was 434.
• This is the third consecutive game that has been decided by three points or less for the Seawolves. SBU defeated Binghamton Wednesday, Feb. 13, 60-57, and fell to Vermont, 46-43.
• Stony Brook drops to 8-6 at home this season.
• The Seawolves fell for just the fifth time when outrebounding an opponent and is now 11-5 when winning the battle of the boards.
• This is the second game the Stony Brook has played on Optimum Local 118. SBU previously routed Binghamton, 59-43, on the Cablevision channel Jan. 9.

Stony Brook hosts Maine in its regular-season home finale Saturday, Feb. 23 at 4 p.m. The Seawolves will honor six seniors, Taylor Burner, Amanda Corona, Gerda Gatling, Dani Klupenger, Sam Landers and Jessica Previlon in a pregame ceremony as part of Senior Day. All Boys & Girls Club members wearing their jerseys will receive free admission and be invited to participate in a free clinic Sunday, Feb. 24 from 11-12:30 p.m. at Pritchard Gym.
