Final Stats

Orono, Maine - Three Seawolves scored in double-figures, with Dani Klupenger leading the way on a season-high 14 points, but Maine opened up an early lead and went on to defeat the Stony Brook women's basketball team, 67-51, Saturday at Alfond Arena.  

Jessica Previlon scored 12 points and grabbed five rebounds, while Sabre Proctor tallied 10 points and pulled down five boards for Stony Brook (11-9, 3-4 AE). 

Ashleigh Roberts led Maine (2-18, 1-6 AE) with 14 points.

Liz Wood, who was one of three Black Bears to net 12 points, and Klupenger were named America East Players of the Game.

Turning Point

Stony Brook grabbed an early edge, 5-4, when Proctor laid it in at the 13:15 mark, but the Black Bears took it right back on a lay-up by Wood.

On the next play, Wood stole the ball from Klupenger and fed it to Roberts who sunk the jumper to give Maine an 8-5 lead with just over 12:30 remaining in the first half.

Roberts struck again about a minute later when she grabbed her own rebound and scored in the paint to extend the lead to five points.

Turnovers plagued Stony Brook on their next two offensive possessions. The Seawolves then found themselves down 12-5 after a Chikilra Goodman turnover led to a Wood hoop with 11:20 until halftime. Roberts stole the ball from Gerda Gatling with 11:09 remaining in the half, and Wood put it in off the glass as Maine went up, 14-5.

The Black Bears capped off a 10-0 run at the 9:15 mark on a lay-up by Roberts that gave the home team a 16-5 advantage. Goodman stole the ball and tallied a hoop in transition to close the gap to nine, 16-7, with 8:25 remaining until the intermission, but the Seawolves could never recover despite only being outscored 38-36 and once again cutting the lead to nine late in the second half.

• Klupenger's four triples ties a season-high for the senior Seawolf. She hit four shots from beyond the arc in back-to-back games against St. Peter's and St. Francis Brooklyn Dec. 15 and Dec. 19, respectively. She tallied one trey in the next game at Rutgers Dec. 21.
• Klupenger also hit one shot from inside the arc. After sinking only one basket from inside 3-point territory in the Seawolves' first 17 games, the guard has hit at least one in the last three games.
• Klupenger also scored 14 points against St. Francis Brooklyn.
• Gatling grabbed a season-best eight boards, which was also a team-high on the afternoon, in Orono. Her career-best is 13, which she notched against Fordham in 2011.
• The Seawolves trailed 29-15 at the break, the largest halftime margin of deficit they have faced all season. SBU headed into the locker room down by 13 against Morgan State on Dec. 18.
• Maine committed 22 turnovers, while Stony Brook finished with 17.
• Stony Brook is 4-6 on the road but holds a 7-3 mark at Pritchard, where it will play its next two games.

News and Notes

• Klupenger nailed four 3-pointers and is now seven shy of becoming the fifth Seawolf to hit 100 shots from behind the arc in her career. The Aurora, Ore., native currently ranks fifth all-time at Stony Brook with 32 career triples.
