Final Stats

Hartford, Conn. - Despite playing to a 24-24 tie in the first half, the Stony Brook women’s basketball team was unable to overcome a second-half barrage of points by Hartford and fell, 59-43. 

Sabre Proctor led Stony Brook (10-7, 2-2 AE) with 13 points, while Teasha Harris and Chikilra Goodman chipped in 11 apiece. Jessica Previlon grabbed a team-best eight rebounds in the loss.

Daphne Elliott paced Hartford (11-6, 2-2 AE) with a game-high 19 points on 42.9 percent shooting (6-for-14).

Elliott and Goodman were named America East players of the game.

Turning Point

The game was a back-and-forth affair for much of the contest, with neither team able to gain a distinct advantage. Proctor scored five straight points for the Seawolves, starting with a lay-up with 15:00 left in the second half and continuing with a three-point play with just under 14 minutes left in regulation to give SBU a 32-30 lead. 

The Hawks responded with a 10-0 run to tip the game in their favor. Ruthanne Doherty tallied two lay-ups at the 13:28 and 12:44 marks, respectively. Alyssa Englert and Shanise Bultron hit a pair of shots from behind the arc to extend Hartford’s lead to 40-33 with 10:30 remaining in regulation.

After the under-eight media timeout, Nikkia Smith scored a bucket, as Hartford’s cushion grew to nine. Stony Brook was unable to get back in game, as the Hawks scored 10 of the contest's final 16 points to seal the victory. 

• Harris and Elliott each had 11 points in the first half for Stony Brook and Hartford, respectively.
• There were seven ties and seven lead changes in the teeter-totter first half.
• Proctor scored nine of her 13 points in the second stanza and went 5-for-5 from the charity stripe.
• The Seawolves held the Hawks to 29.6 percent (8-for-27) shooting in the first half, but the home team shot 54.2 percent (13-for-24) after the break.
• Stony Brook scored five points on fast break opportunities, while Hartford tallied two.
• The Seawolves’ bench outscored the Hawks’ reserves, 13-12.
• SBU committed 21 turnovers, while Hartford had 14.
• The Hawks owned a slight edge on the boards, 33-32, but Stony Brook held a 26-25 advantage in defensive rebounds.
• Hartford shot 47.4 percent from three-point range (9-for-19), including 62.5 percent (5-for-8) in the second half.

News and Notes

• Harris made her first career start for Stony Brook. 
• This is SBU's first loss on a Saturday this season. The Seawolves had previously been 3-0.  
• Hartford has won 16 consecutive games against Stony Brook. The Seawolves last defeated the Hawks on Feb. 22, 2006.
• Kluepenger went 0-for-2 from behind the arc. The senior is 13 treys away from becoming the fifth member of the SBU women’s basketball team to sink 100 trifectas in her career.
• Stony Brook is now 1-1 in America East road games this season.
