Sept. 17, 2009
Stony Brook, N.Y. - Greetings and welcome to the first installment of the 2009/10 season Coach's Corner - a monthly newsletter to keep you informed and up to date on Stony Brook Tennis!
Summer is over because the Seawolves are back in action. The men competed at the Cornell Invitational this past weekend and had some impressive results. Halvar Dil '10 and Mitch Wong '12 captured the "B" flight doubles championship, notching wins over St. Bonaventure, Army and Lehigh along the way. Roope Kailaheimo '13 kicked off his collegiate career by advancing all the way to the finals of the "B" flight singles draw, recording four victories on his march to the finals. In the "A" flight doubles - the teams of Ivan Rummel '11 / Joe Agler '13 and Jon Epstein '10 / Kailaheimo '13 advanced to the semifinals in their respective halves of the draw. All in all - it was a great start to the new season.
This weekend marks the start of our 3rd Annual Stony Brook Classic women's tournament. This year's field includes nine teams and is highlighted by the appearance of Houston, West Virginia, Army and Navy. Please come out and support your Seawolves; play starts at 1 p.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Once again, we will include a One on One Doubles tournament on Sunday. Coach Ed Krass, the founder and CEO of One on One Doubles will be our special guest and will Emcee Sunday's event. We encourage you to stop by and enjoy all of the action as well as the rockin' blues. For more information on this exciting form of tennis please visit www.oneononedoubles.com.
Homecoming will be held on Saturday October 3rd. In addition to renewing old acquaintances - you will also have an opportunity to see both teams compete. The men and women will be hosting the 11th Annual Stony Brook 3-Way as we take on St. Peter's at 9 a.m. and Sacred Heart at 3 p.m. Please stop by the courts and catch some great tennis action. On the weekend of October 10/11 - the men will be hosting the first ever Stony Brook Invitational. It will be an eight-team field and the tennis will be going on all day. As you can see - it's going to be a busy fall for the Seawolves and we hope to see many of you over the next several weeks.
If you know of any teammates/supporters that would like to receive the Coach's Corner - please feel free to send me their email address.
Take care and I look forward to seeing you on the other side of the net!
