Coach's Corner - A Note From the Desk of Coach Glassman
Feb. 26, 2009
Stony Brook, N.Y. - Greetings from the Stony Brook Tennis office and welcome to the second installment of the 2009 Coach's Corner!
The spring season is in full swing and the Seawolves are off to a great start. The women opened up at St John's on February 18 and came away with a 6-1 victory. The win marked the first time since the 2002 season that Stony Brook has defeated the Red Storm. Paola Rodolfi '10 led the way with wins at first singles and second doubles. The ladies followed that with a trip to West Point where they defeated Army for the first time in school history. After dropping the doubles point - Gayatri Krishnan ' 11 secured the victory at #4 singles with a 7-5, 6-1 win to clinch the match as Stony Brook won 4-3. The Seawolves then went on to defeat UConn that same afternoon by a score of 7-0. Prerana Appineni '12 recorded her first collegiate victory at #3 singles in the win. Next up for the women is a trip to New York City where they will take on defending America East Champions, Boston University, on Saturday February 28 at 1pm at Columbia University.
The men started the season by competing at the Yale University 3-Way event. They kicked off the weekend with a 5-2 victory over Big East member Georgetown. Ivan Rummel ' 11 recorded wins at first singles and first doubles. Following that match was a tough defeat at the hands of South Carolina Upstate as the guys dropped three, three-set matches in singles play. The following afternoon the Seawolves faced off against Ivy League power Yale University and dropped a 7-0 decision. However, the loss to Yale only made the guys tougher as they faced off against Army on February 20. Going into the match against the Cadets - Stony Brook had won only once in 18 tries. The series history did not deter the Seawolves as they started with a win in doubles to go up 1-0. There was no looking back in the singles as the Seawolves took four of the six matches and recorded a 5-2 win. Halvar Dil '11 led the charge with wins at second singles and first doubles. The next day the men returned to face UConn and came away with a 6-1 win. Jon Epstein '10 turned in a fine performance at third singles with a 7-6, 7-5 victory. The men will face off against Columbia on Saturday February 28 at 10am in New York City. Please come out and support the Seawolves!! www.goseawolves.org
