Men's tennis drops pair of matches on opening weekend
Feb. 16, 2013
Bethlehem, Pa. - The Stony Brook men's tennis team kicked off 2013 with losses at Penn and at Lehigh. Despite the season-opening defeats, the Seawolves showed some strength in doubles. In the season opener at Penn, Stony Brook was edged, 8-7, at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. Freshman Rick Timmerman (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) teamed with sophomore Albert Fontova (Lleida, Spain) to erase a 7-1 Penn lead at No. 3 doubles with six consecutive games, but the Quaker duo of Kaplan and Wee held on to win. Timmerman took Penn's Kocovic to a second-set tiebreaker at No. 1 singles. Senior Robert Forai (Novi Sad, Serbia) captured Stony Brook's only singles win against Lehigh as he defeated Matt Savran, 6-4, 6-3. Stony Brook won at least five games in each of the three doubles points against the Mountain Hawks. The Seawolves will be back in action in two weeks at the Yale 4-Way in Connecticut.
