America East names Coaches Award after the late Dave Alexander

Feb. 17, 2014

Worcester, Mass. - The America East Conference has renamed its Swimming & Diving Coaches Award the David Alexander Coaches Award in honor of the late Dave Alexander, the longtime Stony Brook men's & women's swimming & diving head coach. The award is annually given to the senior that has compiled the most career points at the America East Championship, and this year's award was presented by Alexander's wife, Moira, to New Hampshire's Lauren McCandless at the conclusion of the 2014 America East Championship Sunday night.

Alexander, who passed away on June 28, 2012 at the age of 62 following a long and courageous battle against cancer, founded the women's swimming & diving team in 1979 and then took over the men's program in 1995. During his 32-year career at Stony Brook, he led the #Seawolves to more than 300 dual meet victories while coaching more than 100 All-Conference swimmers, including four All-Americans.

Alexander will always be remembered for being an outstanding mentor to his student-athletes and a terrific ambassador for the university. Among the America East swimming & diving community, he is remembered fondly as a coach who had a warm spirit and cared deeply about others, including his fellow coaches and swimmers, as was evident through his constant congratulating and wishing luck to all teams.
