Canada and United States To Battle For World Lacrosse Championship On Saturday

Manchester, England - As expected, Canada and the United States will battle for the 2010 World Championship in lacrosse on Saturday. ESPNU will televise the game live at 11 am Eastern. Despite losing to Canada, 10-9, the US advanced to the finals with relative ease. The Americans (5-1) have won by at least 14 goals in four of their five victories. Stony Brook is well represented at this year's World Championships. Stony Brook head coach Rick Sowell, who recently announced his incoming recruiting class, is an assistant with Team USA. Canada (6-0), which has outscored its opponents, 101-34, is the defending world champion. Rising senior Kevin Crowley (New Westminster, British Columbia) has five goals and five assists for the Canadians. Rhys Duch '08 has eight goals and two assists heading into tomorrow's Championship game. The Seawolves' all-time leading goal scorer, rising senior Jordan McBride (New Westminster, British Columbia), leads Team Scotland (5-2) and is second in the tournament with 27 goals in seven games. The Scots will play Team Netherlands in the seventh place game. In the fifth-place game, Team England (3-3) will take on Germany, which lost to the Brits, 12-3, in the opening game of the tournament. Incoming freshman Jak Wawrzyniak (Manchester, England), the youngest member of Team England, has one goal to his credit. Team Italy (4-3) has received two goals and an assist from rising junior Greg Miceli (King City, Ontario). The Italians will play Latvia in the 19th-place game. Team Poland (5-2), coached by Sean Chamberlain '07, is in the 13th-place game against the Czech Republic. The 30-country tournament began on July 15 and concludes with the Canada-US game.
