Ryan Wellner is in his third season as an assistant men's lacrosse coach at Stony Brook. Wellner primarily works with the defense and face-off specialists. Wellner helped long stick midfielder Steven Waldeck earn America East honors for a third straight season as well as honorable mention All-American. Waldeck finished with a school record 112 ground balls and was the nation's leading scorer among all long poles. Waldeck also was drafted by the MLL's Toronto Nationals and NLL's Minnesota Swarm. The Long Island native has continued to help Adam Rand evolve into one the country's premier face-off specialists. Rand was 266-432 (.616), third best in Division I, at the "X", and his 28 face-offs won at Binghamton is tied for the third most in NCAA history. Wellner arrived at Stony Brook in 2009 after spending a season as the men's assistant coach and defensive coordinator at Washington & Lee University in Virginia, helping the Generals to a 9-6 record. Prior to W&L he served as the defensive coordinator for three seasons at the Stevens Institute of Technology in New Jersey where he helped lead the Ducks to a pair of NCAA Tournament berths. Wellner's defenses produced a pair of All-America defensemen and ranked among the Top 10 in Division III in scoring defense. A 2000 graduate of Mary Washington College with a bachelor of science in business management, Wellner also served as an assistant coach at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (2004) and Chaminade High School (2003), was the co-founder and director of the New York Lacrosse Academy and served as the Director of Operations for the National Lacrosse League from 2001-2003. He was a captain and four-year letterwinner for the lacrosse team at Mary Washington, earning the school's Outstanding Senior Award in 2000. |
