Kickoff: Stony Brook (9-2, 5-1 Big South), which earned one of 10 at-large berths, will host Villanova in the first round of the Division I Football Championship on Saturday afternoon. Kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m. from Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium. Dan Gutowsky and John Gregory will have the call on ESPN3. Mike Solano, Curt Hylton and Jeff Bernstein will broadcast all the action on WUSB 90.1 and GoSeawolves.org.
Opponent: With Old Dominion (7-1) ineligible for the title, Villanova (8-3, 6-2) captured the CAA's automatic bid despite a four-way tie with New Hampshire, Towson and Richmond. The Wildcats were awarded the conference's automatic bid based on a tiebreaker. Villanova had four student-athletes earn first team All-CAA honors, led by sophomore running back Kevin Monangai, who led the conference in yards (1,190) and yards per game (108.2). Juniors Rakim Cox and Antoine Lewis were two of five defensive linemen on the first team, while senior Eric Loper made it as a cornerback. Redshirt freshman quarterback John Robertson was named the CAA's Rookie of the Year after accounting for 2,766 yards and 27 touchdowns. A total of 12 Wildcats were named all-conference on Monday.
Series: This will be the first meeting between Stony Brook and Villanova, but not the last. The Seawolves will head to the CAA at the conclusion of this season.
News & Notes:
• Stony Brook is making its second straight appearance in the Division I Football Championship. Last season, the Seawolves defeated Albany, 31-28, before falling to national runner-up Sam Houston State, 34-27.
• Walter Payton Award candidate Miguel Maysonet is 133 yards away from 5,000 for his career. Maysonet rushed for 385 yards as a freshman at Hofstra, and has 4,482 in 35 games at Stony Brook. Maysonet also reached the 50-touchdown threshold with two against Liberty. He has 51 TDs (46 rushing, 4 receiving and 1 kick return) as a Seawolf.
• Kevin Norrell extended his streak of 100 or more receiving yards to six with 118 against Liberty.
• Last week was Stony Brook’s bye as the Seawolves played 11 straight weeks. Appalachian State and Sam Houston State also played 11 straight weeks.
