Aug. 27, 2010
Stony Brook, N.Y. - Junior Edwin Gowins (Bellport, N.Y.) and sophomore Wesley Skiffington (Brandon, Fla.) recently were honored by the College Sporting News, with their selection to the magazine's All-America second team. Both players already have earned preseason honors, with Gowins' selection to the all-Big South team and Skiffington being named a third team All-American by Phil Steele's College Football Review and to the Fred Mitchell Award watchlist, honoring the top kicker from the FCS, Division II, III and NAIA. Gowins, a running back, earned All-Big South honors for a second straight year after rushing for 890 yards and nine touchdowns in 2009, both team bests. He's already run for 2,200 yards, ranking fourth in school history. Aside from leading the Big South in rushing, Gowins was 22nd in the nation. Skiffington led the Seawolves with 71 points, connecting on 15-of-17 field goals and 26-of-30 extra points in 2009. Stony Brook completed its final scrimmage on Friday and begins preparation on Sunday for the 2010 season opener at South Florida on September 4. The game against the Bulls will be the Seawolves first against an FBS opponent.
