Joe Viadella became the newest member of the Seawolves coaching staff in July. He comes to Stony Brook with a wealth of experience, having accumulated over 23 years of coaching experience at the high school, college and professional level. Prior to his arrival at SB, he was the head coach at Mansfield University for six seasons after working one season as the offensive coordinator for the Ohio Glory of the World League of American Football in 1992.
Viadella’s college coaching career began at Rhode Island where he served as the outside linebacker coach from 1980-83 after working three seasons at the high school level. In 1983, Viadella moved to the University of Kentucky as a wide receivers coach for the next three seasons.
He left Kentucky in 1986 to take over as the offensive coordinator at Bloomburg University in Pa. After three years at Bloomsburg, Viadella again moved back into the Division I ranks as the quarterbacks coach at Wyoming. A two-year stint at Wyoming preceded his first professional job with the Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League. He was named co-defensive coordinator/linebacker coach in 1990 and worked for two seasons with the CFL team before heading back to college football at the University of Louisville. At Louisville, he guided the linebackers for two years before moving accepting offensive coordinator job with the Ohio Glory.
In 1994, he again stepped back into college football when he joined the Mansfield staff as a consultant before assuming the position of head coach later that year.
He is a member of the American Football Coaches Association since 1980 and served as the President of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference from 1997-98.
A 1983 graduate of the University of Rhode Island, Viadella earned his bachelor of science degree in Human Sciences and Services. He is a United States Marine Corps Veteran, serving his country from 1974-77.
