Stony Brook to join CAA Football in 2013

A new era of Stony Brook Football in the premier FCS conference to begin in 2013.

Mary Tovornik began at Stony Brook in February of 2007 as an assistant athletic trainer before earning a promotion to associate athletic trainer. Tovornik is a 1997 graduate of Salisbury University with a bachelor's degree in physical education/concentration in athletic training and completed her master's degree in biomechanics through the school of education in 1999. Tovornik is now in the final phases of completing her doctoral degree in adult learning through the school of Educational Leadership at the University of Connecticut. Tovornik has been a NATABOC certified athletic trainer since 1997 and became a NYS certified athletic trainer in 2008.

Tovornik most previously worked at Lock Haven University from the Fall of 2004 through the Spring of 2006 as an assistant athletic trainer and assistant professor in the Health Science Department. While at LHU she was in charge of the medical care for football, men's and women's cross country/track and field, men's and women's basketball, women's lacrosse, women's swimming, out of season sports and long term rehabilitations.

Prior to Lock Haven, Tovornik worked as a certified athletic trainer at the University of Connecticut from the Fall of 1997 through the Spring of 2004. Initially she worked as graduate assistant with the women's soccer and baseball teams for approximately 2 years. She then worked as the 1st assistant for 5 years with UConn football until Spring of 2004, being hired as a full-time ATC in 2002.

Tovornik has been an American Red Cross instructor since 1997. She was named as a Who's Who of American Women award recipient in 2006 and gave a presentation at the Maryland Athletic Trainer's Association annual meeting in 2006, titled "Current Tends of Sideline Management of Concussions."

Tovornik is an adjunct instructor and an approved clinical instructor in Stony Brook's Athletic Training Education Program (ATEP). She is the head athletic trainer for football.
