Cambridge, Mass. - For the first time ever, Stony Brook men's basketball has placed two student-athletes on the America East Preseason All-Conference team as senior Dave Coley (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and sophomore Jameel Warney (Plainfield, N.J.) made the five-man squad, the conference office announced Tuesday.
Rounding out the America East's preseason squad are Binghamton's Jordan Reed, Hartford's Mark Nwakamma and Vermont's Brian Voelkel.
Coley and Warney are the fifth and sixth #Seawolves student-athletes to ever receive the preseason recognition, joining Tommy Brenton (2012), Bryan Dougher (2011), Muhammad El-Amin (2009) and Mitchell Beauford (2006) on the list. The duo are the first pair of teammates to be on the America East preseason team since John Holland and Jake O'Brien of Boston University in 2010.
Coley is coming off a strong junior season in which he was third on the team in scoring (11.1 PPG), rebounding (4.2 RPG), assists (1.4 APG) and steals (1.0 SPG). He was named third-team All-America East, and his defensive prowess on the perimeter earned him America East All-Defensive team honors. He is just 127 points away from becoming the 22nd player in program history and fifth in the program's Div. I history to score 1,000 career points.
Warney is returning after a stellar rookie campaign in which he was named the America East Rookie of the Year. He led Stony Brook in scoring (12.4 PPG), blocks (1.5 BPG) and field goal percentage (.618) while also finishing second in rebounding (7.2 RPG). His field goal percentage ranked fifth-best in the nation, and at season's end he was also named a Mid-Major Freshman All-American.
Coley and Warney, along with the rest of the #Seawolves are preparing for the 2013-14 campaign as they look to capture a fourth America East regular season championship in the last five seasons and seek out the program's first-ever tournament title and NCAA Tournament bid. The season commences Friday, Nov. 8 at home against Marist at Pritchard Gymnasium at 8 p.m.
