Stony Brook, N.Y. - Coming off its best regular season in the program's Division I history, the Stony Brook University men's basketball heads to Albany this weekend for the 2009 America East Tournament. The fifth-seeded Seawolves will open the tournament against the fourth-seeded New Hampshire Wildcats in an quarterfinal game on Saturday at SEFCU Arena. Tip-off is set for 8:30 p.m. Fans can listen to the game locally on WUSB 90.1 FM or online at goseawolves.org with Jeff Bernstein, Curt Hylton and Mike Solano announcing. The game will also be televised live on Time Warner Cable.

Stony Brook (16-13, 8-8) enters the 2009 America East tournament after finishing in a fourth-place tie in the America East standings with the Wildcats, its best finish ever. The Seawolves also set Division I program records for overall wins since joining the America East in 2001-02 (16), America East conference victories (eight) and road victories (nine) and are guaranteed of their second winning season since 1992-93.

SBU also finished the regular season ranked first in the America East and 27th in the country in scoring defense (60.4 ppg) in addition to leading the conference in three-point field goal defense (.309), steals per game (8.8) and turnover margin (+2.8).The three-point field goal defense mark and steal per game mark ranked 23rd and 18th in the NCAA, respectively.

Junior Muhammad El-Amin (Lansing, Mich.) enters the postseason as the Seawolves leading scorer as he averaged 15.4 points per game, the seventh best mark in the conference. El-Amin also finished the regular season ranked fourth in conference in free throw percentage (.810) and three-point field goal percentage (.390).

Versus New Hampshire
- New Hampshire leads the all-time series against, 12-5. The Wildcats have won four straight meetings between the teams including both games this season. The Seawolves last victory over New Hampshire came in a 67-49 win at Stony Brook Arena on Feb. 18, 2007.


 

 

Postseason History against New Hampshire
- This will be the first ever postseason meeting between the schools.

First meeting: UNH 71, SBU 60 (1/28; Stony Brook, N.Y.)
Eric Gilchrese scored 16 of his team-high 22 points in the second half as the Wildcats rallied for a 71-60 victory over the Seawolves in the first meeting between the teams this season. Gilchrese went 5-for-7 from three-point range for the Wildcats, who shot 66.7 percent in the second half as they rallied from a nine-point halftime deficit. The only player in double-figures for Stony Brook, El-Amin went 7-for-16 from the field and 9-for-10 from the free throw line. Freshman Tommy Brenton (Columbia, Md.) tallied six points and a game-high 12 rebounds for the Seawolves, who went 23-for-29 from the foul line.

Second Meeting: UNH 58, SBU 57 (OT) (3/1; Durham, N.H.)
Tyrece Gibbs hit the game-winning three-pointer with 34 seconds left in overtime to lead the New Hampshire Wildcats to a 58-57 victory over the Seawolves last Sunday at Lundhold Gymnasium in the regular season finale for both teams. Gibbs hit a three with four seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime. El-Amin scored a team-high 18 points for the Seawolves, while senior Demetrius Young (Sacramento, Calif.) added 15 points and five rebounds. Gibbs scored a game-high 21 points for the Wildcats as he knocked down six of his 14 three-point attempts.
