Final Stats

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Junior Anthony Jackson (Columbus, Ohio) scored a career-high 21 points, freshman Jameel Warney (Plainfield, N.J.) scored a career-high 18 points and senior Tommy Brenton (Columbia, Md.) posted 14 rebounds, nine points and six assists to lead the Stony Brook men's basketball team to an 82-75 victory over previously unbeaten Canisius Saturday at Pritchard Gymnasium.

Stony Brook improves to 4-1 on the season, thanks in large part to a dominant performance underneath the basket. The Seawolves outrebounded the Golden Griffins 47-32, outscored them in the paint 34-28 and collected 19 offensive rebounds that led to 21 second chance points.

"I liked our performance today against a pretty good team. We outrebounded them, outhustled them and did more damage in the paint. But we have no time to celebrate this win because we have to prepare for a battle with UConn tomorrow."

Turning Point
Early in the second half, the Seawolves were clinging to a two-point lead, 43-41, but the team turned up the jets and went on a 9-0 run, fueled by Brenton. The senior forward hit back-to-back layups, the second on a pretty feed from Warney that made it 50-41. Jackson finished the run with a pair of free throws after a technical foul was assessed to Canisius head coach Jim Baron.

Stony Brook stretched the lead to as much as 15 before Canisius cut it to six, 74-68, with one minute to play. But the Seawolves were stellar from the free throw line down the stretch, making 11 of 14 attempts at the stripe in the final 1:34.

By the Numbers

• Stony Brook was +15 on the boards and now has a +8.6 rebounding margin this season.
• The Seawolves posted season highs in field goals made (25) and free throws made (27). 
• Brenton's 14 rebounds are a season high. He also posted a five or more assist day for the third time this season.
• Warney was 7-for-14 from the field and is shooting 58% for the season.
• Sophomore Anthony Mayo (Philadelphia, Pa.) posted a career high six rebounds while also scoring eight points and blocking two shots.

• Stony Brook is now 4-1 for the first time since November 2009 and for just the second time in program history.
• Stony Brook is now 3-0 against teams from the MAAC this season.
• The Seawolves are now 40-16 at Pritchard Gymnasium since the start of the 2008-09 season.
• Today was SB's first 80-point performance against a Div. I team since last season's 80-68 victory over UMBC on Feb. 9, 2012.
• Today was the first of back-to-back regular season games for Stony Brook. The team has not done that since November 2001.
