Stony Brook, N.Y. - Stony Brook Athletics dedicated its baseball field to former Stony Brook star and major league baseball pitcher Joe Nathan '97 in a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Saturday morning at Joe Nathan Field. The field is named in honor of Nathan, who made a $500,000 lead gift for the construction of the field.
Among the honored guests were Nathan, Stony Brook University President Samuel L. Stanley, Jr. M.D., Stony Brook Director of Athletics Jim Fiore, SBU Head Baseball Coach Matt Senk and members of Bethpage Federal Credit Union, who made a 100,000 donation for the construction of the field's new scoreboard. Also in attendance were the 2012 Seawolves and many Stony Brook baseball alumni, including several of Nathan's former teammates.
Fiore, Stanley, Nathan and Matt Senk each spoke to begin the ceremony before the official ribbon-cutting ceremony took place. Nathan, Stanley, Senk and Bethpage Federal Credit Union CEO Rob Kelly then threw out a ceremonial first pitch to the Seawolves four seniors- Tyler Johnson, Pat Cantwell, Evan Stecko-Haley and Sal Intagliata.
The event then wrapped up with a barbeque reception.
