Nick Tropeano And Tom Koehler Profiled

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Former Stony Brook University baseball star Tom Koehler '08 as well as sophomore Nick Tropeano (West Islip, N.Y.) were each recently profiled in on-line articles. Koehler led the Seawolves to the 2008 America East Championship and is currently pitching for the Jacksonville Suns, the Double-A affiliate of the Florida Marlins. Tropeano helped Stony Brook to the 2010 conference championship and is pitching in the Cape Cod League for the Cotuit Kettleers. Koehler is 12-2 with a 2.90 ERA in 114.2 innings pitched for the Suns and recently started the Southern League All-Star Game. Koehler has struck out 98 batters and his 12 wins lead the league. Drafted by the Marlins in the 18th round of the 2008 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, Koehler was promoted to the Suns in April. Last season, he went 4-1 with a 3.38 ERA in six starts for the Jupiter Hammerheads of the Advanced-A Florida State League. A two-time, All-America East second team selection, Koehler went 6-5 with a 4.15 ERA in 14 starts for the Seawolves as a senior. He also led the America East in innings pitched (93.1) and strikeouts (111) and ranked 19th in the nation with 10.71 strike outs per nine innings. Koehler finished his four-year Stony Brook career second in program history in innings pitched (293.1) and third in strikeouts (297). The Seawolves have had 32 players sign professional contracts under head coach Matt Senk including 23 since the program jumped to Division I in 2000.
Tropeano has made seven starts for the Kettleers, has an ERA of 3.77 and leads the league with 39 strikeouts. Tropeano has gone 7.2 innings or more in four of his seven starts. He earned the win in the Kettleers 2-1 win over the Bourne Braves on July 21, allowing one run in 7.2 innings. Named the 2010 America East Co-Pitcher of the Year, Tropeano went 8-4 with a 2.44 ERA , striking out an America East best 106 batters in 99.2 innings. The ERA mark ranked 24th in the country and his 6.86 hits allowed per nine innings ranked 17th. Tropeano had the best ERA in the America East during conference play (1.29) and led the conference in strikeouts per game (9.6) and innings per start (7.1). He also led the America East in complete games (seven) and was second in opponent batting average (.213). |
