Stony Brook's Vanderka throws no-hitter (Associated Press)

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Stony Brook junior starter Frankie Vanderka (Levittown, N.Y.) has earned two more national honors for pitching a no-hitter against Fordham last Sunday. The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association named Vanderka its National Pitcher of the Week and CollegeBaseballInsider.com named him Northeast Region Pitcher of the Week.

Vanderka tossed a no-hitter against Fordham this past Sunday, throwing hitless nine innings in Stony Brook's 2-0 win over Fordham. He struck out six batters while walking three (one intentionally). The game was played as a seven-inning affair, but Vanderka's pitching duel with Fordham's Chris Pike sent the scoreless game into extra innings. The Seawolves finally broke through in the ninth inning with a pair of runs, and Vanderka finished off the Rams by setting down the 2-3-4 hitters in order in the bottom of the ninth.

This was Vanderka's second career no-hitter; he also threw one as a freshman on March 18, 2011 at NJIT. After throwing that no-hitter, he also earned Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week honors. This is Vanderka's second America East Pitcher of the Week honor this season. He previously was a recipient of the award on Feb. 18 after throwing six shutout innings at Florida International.

This season, Vanderka is 1-2 with a 2.28 ERA and 13 strikeouts in 27-2/3 innings.
