Seawolves Fall To Pace University, 4-3, In Extra Innings

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. (www.pace.edu) - The Pace University baseball team won on a RBI single by Rob Faist (Spring Valley, NY) that scored Matt McNichol (Staten Island, NY). It was Faist's second game winning hit in the last four games. Pace improves to 14-28, having won six of their last eight games. Stony Brook drops to 23-22 on the season.
Stony Brook took an early lead with runs in the first and second innings. In the first, Kevin Solano (Brooklyn, NY) led off with a double to left center field. After Matt Devins (Utica, NY) flew out to right, Solano advanced to third. Andrew Larsen (Valley Stream, NY) then hit a towering shot deep to right field, to score Solano with a sacrifice fly ball. In the second, Nick Theoharis (Bayside, NY) homered to centerfield to give the Sea Wolves a 2-0 lead.
In the 6th inning, Mike Ferrauto (Thornwood, NY) walked with two outs. Doug Hehner (Howell, NJ) hit his 6th homerun of the year to tie the game at 2-2. Mike Pahira (Hombel, NJ) followed with his 3rd homerun of the year, and marked the first time this season two Pace players homered in back-to-back at-bats.
In the 8th with Pace leading 3-2, Stephen Didsbury (Waterloo, NY) singled to lead off the inning. Solano then bunted Didsbury over to second and Devins followed with a single to center field, scoring Didsbury with the go-ahead run.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the 11th. McNichol entered the game as a defensive replacement for freshman Adam Harwood (Los Angeles, Calif.) who was 3 for 3 and reached base in four plate appearances. In his fourth appearance, Harwood was hit with a fastball just below the elbow. McNichol hit a soft ground ball to Devins at short. While McNichol beat the throw to the bag, Devins throw was up the line and ended up advancing McNichol to second. JC Pullum (White Plains, NY) attempted to bunt McNichol over, but fouled out on his first attempt. Faist followed with a line drive to center field that would score McNichol from second with the winning run for a final score of 4-3, Setters.
Hehner and Pullum each had two hits for the Setters. Jared Monti (Hampton, NJ) started for Pace, allowing two runs on two hits over six innings. Matt Reilly (Denville, NJ) entered the game in the top of the 7th, and lasted five innings, allowing one run on eight hits while striking out three. Reilly picked up his first win of the year, putting him at 1-5. Nick Abel (Wantagh, NY) took the loss for Stony Brook, after allowing one run on five hits over the game's final two innings.
