Stony Brook, N.Y. - Freshman Nick Tropeano (West Islip, N.Y.) hurled a three-hitter to lead the Stony Brook University baseball team to a 4-1 victory over the Albany Great Danes in the first game of an America East doubleheader this afternoon at University Field. Albany won the second game, 10-7, to earn a split of the four-game series. Stony Brook is now 20-18 overall and 9-7 in the America East.

Tropeano dominated in earning his team-high fifth victory of the season, allowing just one run in the seven-inning game. The right hander struck out eight and walked one as he hurled his third complete game. Sophomore Nick Thode (Huntington Station, N.Y.) led the Stony Brook offense in game one, going 1-for-3 with two RBI.

Albany scored its only run of the first game with two outs in the third as Gary Pitcheralle hit a solo home run off Tropeano to give the Great Danes a 1-0 lead. But the Seawolves answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning on a two-run home run from Thode and a run-scoring single from senior Steven Mazzurco (Selden, N.Y.).

Tropeano did the rest as he allowed just one base runner over the final four innings to secure the victory. SBU scored the final run of the contest in the sixth on a two-out RBI double from senior Chad Rebecca (Mount Prospect, Ill.). Ryan White took the loss for Albany, allowing three runs on seven hits in 4.0 innings of work.

Albany jumped to an early lead in the second game, scoring two runs in the second on back-to-back RBI singles from Pete Eichner and Ralph Keppler. The Great Danes added a run in the third on a Dave West run-scoring single.

The Seawolves cut the Albany lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the inning on a two-out two-run line drive home run from sophomore Chad Marshall (Paris, Ontario). Stony Brook then struck for four runs in the fourth to grab a 6-3 lead. Senior Brian Witkowski (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) had the big hit of the inning as he smashed a two-run home run to right-center.

But the Great Danes answered with four runs in the fifth highlighted by run-scoring hits from Kyle Crean and Eichner. The Seawolves tied the game at seven in the bottom of the inning on an RBI groundout from senior Michael Tansey (Valley Stream, N.Y.).

Albany took the lead for good in the sixth as Ryan Gugel hit a two-run triple to put the Great Danes on top 9-7. The Great Danes added a run in the seventh on a Sean Donovan RBI single. The Seawolves nearly rallied to tie it in the ninth, putting two runners on with two outs. But Albany reliever Sean Gregory retired junior Robert Dyer (Selden, N.Y.) to end the game.

Gregory picked up the victory for the Great Danes, as he held the Seawolves scoreless over the final four innings of the contest. Junior Chris Maier (Farmingdale, N.Y.) took the loss for the Seawolves, giving up three runs on five hits in 1.2 innings. Witkowski went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored in the second game.
