Baseball Knocks Off San Diego State In 14-Inning Marathon, 18-14
March 31, 2010
San Diego, Calif. - Freshman William Carmona (Hempstead, N.Y.) hurled 6.2 innings of scoreless relief and the Stony Brook University baseball team scored four unearned runs in the 14th to defeat the San Diego State Aztecs, 18-14, on Tuesday night at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The marathon game lasted five hours, 57 minutes and the teams combined for 37 hits including 24 for the Seawolves. Stony Brook improves to 8-11 with the victory. Junior Chad Marshall (Paris, Ontario) led off the 14th with a single to center and he then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from junior Stephen Marino (Lake Grove, N.Y.). Carmona then lifted a fly ball to right field, which was dropped, allowing Carmona to reach second and Marshall to move to third. The Aztecs followed by intentionally walking sophomore Sal Intagliata (Franklin Square, N.Y.) to load the bases and bring up freshman Travis Jankowski (Lancaster, Pa.). Jankowski failed to connect on a suicide squeeze attempt but Marshall avoided the tag of Robert Alcala at the plate to give the Seawolves a 15-14 lead. Jankowski eventually struck out but freshman John Adornetto (Commack, N.Y.) followed with a grounder to third which was misplayed, allowing Carmona to score. Dyer capped the inning with a two-run double to left to give the Seawolves an 18-14 lead. Carmona then retired the Aztecs in order in the bottom of the 14th to secure the victory for Stony Brook. Carmona (2-0) allowed just two hits in his 6.2 innings of work.
Senior Justin Echevarria (Uniondale, N.Y.) led the Seawolves with five hits in six at-bats while Dyer, Carmona, Marino and sophomore Pat Cantwell (West Islip, N.Y.) each added three hits. Dyer, Marino and freshman Tanner Nivins (Kitchener, Ontario) each drove in three runs while Cantwell scored four runs. The Seawolves jumped to an early lead, scoring four runs in the first and two in second. Nivins highlighted the four-run first with a two-run single while Marshall and Marino each had RBI singles in the second. San Diego State rallied in the second though, striking for six runs. Jomel Torres had a two-run double in the inning and Brandon Decker added a two-run single. With the game tied at eight, the Seawolves scored three runs in the fifth. Marino and Nivins each drew bases-loaded walks in the frame. The Aztecs answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning before taking the lead in the sixth on an RBI double from Chris Wilson and a run-scoring single from Decker. But the Seawolves vaulted back in front in the seventh on RBI singles from Marino, Dyer and Echevarria. The Aztecs tied the game in the eighth behind a run-scoring single from Guy Willeford and a sacrifice fly from Mitch Blackburn. Neither team was able to score in the ninth as the game headed to extra-innings. The Seawolves put together a rally in the 11th, loading the bases with two out. But John Pecoraro got Marino to fly out to right to end the threat. The Aztecs put runners on first and third with two outs in the 13th before Carmona got Brandon Meredith to ground out to first to end the inning. The Seawolves will wrap up their six-game road trip to California on Wednesday, taking on Cal-State Bakersfield. Game is set for 5:30 p.m. EST. |
