Rock Hill, S.C. - Five walks and a three-run triple led to a five-run eighth inning as the 27th-ranked Winthrop Eagles defeated Stony Brook 10-6 on Saturday evening at the Griffin Pontiac Challenge held in Rock Hill, S.C. The Seawolves fell to 1-1 on the young season, while Winthrop improved to 3-1 this year.

After a back-and-forth affair for the first seven innings, Stony Brook took the field in the bottom of the eighth inning holding a 6-5 lead over tournament-host Winthrop. Reliever Dave Mischo walked five of the next seven batters he faced however, walking in two runs with the bases loaded, as Winthrop took a 7-6 lead with two outs in the inning. The Eagles tacked on three insurance runs on a bases clearing triple off the bat of Kyle Roberson that sailed over the head of right fielder Kevin Solano and gave Winthrop the 10-6 advantage. Chris Leroux came in to close the door, retiring the Seawolves in the top of the ninth to end the game.

Stony Brook jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a two-run double by Nick Theoharis. Winthrop answered with single runs in the bottom of the first and second innings, before Matt Devins gave the Seawolves a 4-2 advantage in the top of the third with a two-run shot over the left field wall. Winthrop stormed back with two runs in the fourth and took its first lead of the day, 5-4, with a run in the sixth. SB rallied to tie the score at five on an RBI triple by Justin Michalek in the seventh inning and took the lead back in the top of the eighth on a double by Isidro Fortuna that scored Cole Cicatelli.
