When Dr. Richard F. Laskowski was named the Dean of Physical Education and Athletics at Stony Brook on March 31, 1993, and charged with guiding the university to the NCAA Division I level, he hit the ground running.

Now entering his seventh year as Dean, Dr. Laskowski has designed an NCAA Reclassification Plan for the university's upgrade to Division I and successfully brought the Seawolves to the Division I level: revised and increased the academic standards of the university's student-athletes: undergone the first-ever voluntary NCAA compliance review on an athletic program: negotiated a contract to televise men's and women's basketball, football, lacrosse, and women's soccer: and given the school's spirit a boost with the creation and licensing of an exciting new logo and nickname, the Seawolves. Most recently, and possibly his crowning achievement, Laskowski worked diligently to get the Seawolves into the America East Conference following two years as a Division I independent.

"Since 1988 our two Division I teams, men's lacrosse and women's soccer, have been competing against the best schools in the nation without scholarships. Now that we are upgrading our entire intercollegiate athletics program to Division I, our focus will be on fund raising to provide the scholarship aid needed to be successful in all our sports against these teams. We are looking forward to a most exciting future."

Prior to joining Stony Brook, Dr. Laskowski spent 19 years at St. John's University, serving as the Associate Director of Athletics of Varsity Sports in his final eight years. Laskowski's tenure at St. John's began in 1974, when he created and became the first athletic academic counselor at the school. In 1978, he was named Director of Intramurals, Club Sports and Recreation and held that position until 1983, when he was named Associate Athletic Director. Chairman of the Big East Tennis Committee and a member of the Baseball Committee, Dr. Laskowski was recognized as one of the conference's outstanding administrators at the Big East's 10 year Anniversary Dinner in 1990. Dr. Laskowski received all of his educational degrees from St. John's. He earned a bachelor of social science in 1965, a master's degree in counselor education in 1970, a professional degree in counselor education in 1972, and a doctorate in school administration in 1982. Dr. Laskowski currently resides in Setauket, NY.
