Sept. 23, 2013
It's home football week here at Stony Brook! The #Seawolves will finally make their 2013 home debut at LaValle Stadium as they host Towson this Saturday at LaValle Stadium at 6 p.m. Tickets to the game can be purchased here, and season tickets in the chairback seating section, which includes access to all five Seawolves home games, are available for just $85 each (or $75 each if you purchase four or more). Call (631) 632-4513 for season tickets. Either way, be sure to purchase your tickets in advance because there is a $2 gameday surcharge on every adult ticket. The first 1,000 fans coming to the Towson game will receive a free drawstring bag courtesy of Holiday Inn Express Stony Brook.
Tough One at 'Nova
A rematch of last season's NCAA Div. I Football Championship first-round game and a battle between a pair of nationally ranked teams did not end in Stony Brook's favor as the No. 12 #Seawolves dropped a 30-6 decision to No. 23 Villanova on the road last Saturday. Read the recap here and watch the highlights below.
Here's Newsday's Greg Logan's coverage of the game:
And here's the coverage from Villanova's end:
Volleyball takes two of three
The #Seawolves had a strong showing at the Bryant Invitational, taking St. John's to five sets but losing and then rebounding with wins over Bryant and Princeton. Sophomore Melissa Rigo was named All-Tournament after recording double-doubles in all three matches. Read the recaps here:
Men's Soccer splits weekend matches
The #Seawolves had a great match at Fordham, beating the Rams, 3-2, on Friday before suffering a 2-0 defeat at home to Central Connecticut on Sunday. Senior Will Casey enjoyed a strong weekend with a pair of goals against Fordham, the two coming less than three minutes apart. Read the recaps here:
Women's Soccer drops a pair out west
The #Seawolves were on a roll when they went out west to play in the Omni Hotels Colorado Women's Soccer Classic, but the thin air of the rocky mountains put a damper on their 5-1-1 start as they fell to Colorado and Northern Colorado. Read the recaps here as Stony Brook now regroups for the start of conference play:
#Seawolves in the Pros
It was another great week for #Seawolves alumni. First, former football star Miguel Maysonet was signed to the Indianapolis Colts practice squad, giving Stony Brook two active taxi squad players (Michael Bamiro, Philadelphia Eagles). Then, former men's lacrosse standout JJ Laforet was selected 42nd overall in the National Lacrosse League Draft by the Minnesota Swarm.
On the baseball diamond, former #Seawolves star and current Texas Rangers pitcher Joe Nathan became just the fourth reliever ever to have a 40-save season after his 38th birthday. Once New York Yankees legend Mariano Rivera officially retires next weekend, Nathan will be Major League Baseball's active leader in saves. He currently has 338, which is also 11th best all-time in MLB history. Rangers.com's T.R. Sullivan takes a look at the accomplishment.
And former #Seawolves pitcher Tom Koehler continues his September success, pitching six solid innings against Washington on Sunday and earning his fourth win of the season as the Marlins beat the Nationals, 4-2. Koehler is now 1-1 with a 3.09 ERA in four September starts. Marlins.com's Joe Frisaro has the details.
Welcome Back Demmi
The women's lacrosse team received a boost as former #Seawolves All-American Demmianne Cook is returning to the sidelines as a volunteer assistant coach. Read the details here.
Stony Brook Arena mentioned
Progress is continuing at Stony Brook Arena, which is on track to open a year from now. Most of the seats have been installed, and here's a picture of the future sections 109, 110 and 111. Big Apple Buckets' Ryan Restivo received a tour of the new facility last week, and Kevin Doyle of NBC's College Basketball Talk followed up on Restivo's visit. Restivo also posted a story on men's basketball head coach Steve Pikiell and his player rotation philosophy, which you can read here.
Get Your RED On Minute - Season 3, Episode 2
Be sure to catch up on last week's Get Your RED On Minute, which recaps Stony Brook's Miracle League participation and goes into how diverse the men's soccer team really is. Can you say "Get Your RED On" in Spanish? Watch the end of the video to find out how.
