Thomas Chen Named Director of Athletic Communications At Stony Brook

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Stony Brook University has named Thomas Chen as the Director of Athletic Communications for the Seawolves, Director of Athletics Jim Fiore announced. Chen comes to Stony Brook from Northeastern University where he was the Associate Director of Sports Information.

"We are pleased to welcome Tom to our Seawolves family as the Director of Athletic Communications." Fiore said. "Tom's knowledge and enthusiasm will complement the aggressive multimedia and social networking initiatives which we are supporting within our rising Athletics Department. We look forward to continuing our progress with Tom as our Director."

Chen comes to Stony Brook after spending the last six years working at his alma mater, Northeastern University. After serving as a student assistant for three years, Chen was hired as assistant director of sports information in June 2007.

Since his promotion to associate director in 2009, he has successfully coordinated media strategies for the Matthews Arena renovation and the Sun Life Frozen Fenway event, which featured the Northeastern women's hockey team in collegiate women's hockey's first-ever outdoor game.

Chen served as the managing editor the official website of Northeastern University Athletics, GoNU.com. He also spearheaded the department effort to move GoNU.com's content management system to ICS Sidearm, which included a site re-design.

In addition to overseeing the day-to-day operations of the department, Chen also served as the primary contact for the Huskies' men's basketball program, where he established relationships with media that resulted in coverage in the Boston Globe, Boston Herald, New York Times, FoxSports.com, ESPN the Magazine and ESPNBoston.com.

In addition, Chen served as the secondary contact for the Northeastern football team, where he was responsible for all media communications, statistics, press box management and road game travel.

A native of New York City, Chen graduated from Northeastern Summa Cum Laude with a bachelor's degree in journalism and a minor in History in May of 2007.
